EDWARD GOATER is a choral & orchestral conductor, tenor and teacher living in Somerset. He has a degree in Environmental Science & Ecology, is a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music, and also a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. He studied conducting with Paul Brough and Roland Melia, and for many years was a member of the BBC Singers.
Edward is former Director of the Military Wives Choir Foundation, Taunton and is currently Director of Taunton Choral Society, he also works freelance with other instrumental and vocal ensembles.
Edward has worked with some of the very best musicians in the world including Pierre Boulez, Sir Bryn Terfel, Dame Judith Weir, Sir Simon Rattle, and Bob Chilcott, and has appeared on TV and Radio on numerous occasions. His voice & choral expertise has seen him conduct many vocal ensembles including former Director of Somerset Choral Society, The Wesley Singers, Wells Cathedral and Newcastle Cathedral Choir, and Military Wives Choirs across the country, to name but a few!
As an orchestral conductor he has directed Taunton Sinfonietta, The Lochrian Ensemble, The Central Band of The Royal British Legion, and many others. He has worked with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as Chorus Master.
Edward’s educational work takes him all over the world. He has given workshops in singing and conducting at many events - highlights include the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Marlborough College, Malaysia, and the BBC Ten Pieces Project. Edward’s experience as a performer and conductor make him a valued adjudicator in competitions and guest speaker for many institutions, and he has written for publications like Choir & Organ and the BBC, as well as his Substack.
