EDWARD GOATER is a choral & orchestral conductor, tenor and teacher living in Somerset. He has a degree in Environmental Science & Ecology, is a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music, and also a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. He studied conducting with Paul Brough and Roland Melia and for many years was a member of the BBC Singers.
Edward has held directorships in many ensembles and societies over his career including Somerset Choral Society, Berkshire Youth Choir (Associate Conductor), Military Wives Choir Foundations. Currently he is Musical Director of Taunton Choral Society, and works with other ensembles as visiting conductor on various projects.
Edward has worked with some of the very best musicians in the world including Pierre Boulez, Sir Bryn Terfel, Dame Judith Weir, Sir Simon Rattle, and Bob Chilcott, and has broadcast on TV and Radio on numerous occasions. His expertise in voice and choral training has seen him work with varying vocal ensembles including The Harmonium Singers, The Chelsea Consort, The Wesley Singers, Wells Cathedral and Newcastle Cathedral Choirs, but he is equally at home in front of ensembles and orchestras; working as Chorus Master with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, Taunton Sinfonietta, and countless assembled orchestras for concerts.
Edward’s educational work takes him all over the world. He has given workshops in singing and conducting at many events - highlights include the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Marlborough College, Malaysia, and the BBC Ten Pieces Project. Edward’s experience as a performer and conductor make him a valued adjudicator in competitions and guest speaker for many institutions, and he has written for publications like Choir & Organ and the BBC.

Edward Goater is a choral & orchestral conductor, tenor and teacher with an international career. He is a Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music, and has worked with some of the finest musicians in the world including Norrington, Boulez, Hill, Barenboim and Rattle. He has recorded for Naxos, Signum, Deutsche Grammophon, the BBC and other labels. Edward has conducted many ensembles in his career, and is currently Musical Director of Taunton Choral Society and has a busy schedule of concerts and workshops throughout the year.
In education, Edward teaches and administers at Wells Cathedral School. Outside this he has given workshops in singing and conducting at many events - highlights include the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Marlborough College, Malaysia.
